I didn't get any sense of progression from encountering new mobs. In Torchlight, the mobs had no character. TQ did this pretty well, too, and managed to regularly introduce new, interesting, stronger, mobs to give a since of progression. In Diablo 2, each enemy had a unique and recognizable place in it's act. Their style and combat all felt so homogenous that I quickly got tired of them. Mobs: Building on this, the same theme holds true for mobs. The entirety of Torchlight felt like a randomly generated dungeon. Interesting hand crafted areas came up often enough that the whole thing didn't feel randomly generated. In both cases, enough effort was put into the artwork that I didn't immediately get tired of looking at it.

Each act had enough depth and uniqueness to stand on it's own. TQ was not as good as Diablo here, but it did a good job. Diablo II was fantastic in this respect, and each act had it's own unique atmosphere. The different themes had no soul to them everything was just a mass of polygons with garish color. Levels: Levels became dull extremely quickly, and as soon as I entered a new level set, I quickly wished for the next. Their color pallets for all of the "Acts" were so broad and saturated that they couldn't achieve satisfying contrast internally or even from act to act. The artwork felt really, really generic and repetitive, and this effected the entire game. I think most of it had to do with, or was a consequence of the art direction. I will try to explain why I found Torchlight so disappointing. I have played Diablo II, Titan's Quest and Torchlight. I'm interested in what different things make people enjoy ARPGs that would explain the difference. Some, like me, found it incredibly dull, and others thought it was on par with Diablo 2. I'm curious as to what people liked about Torchlight 2. And I think plenty of people can have fun with both of these games. That said, the skill system seems so well-balanced and polished that a good deal of my fears for the progression system are eased.īut at the end of the day, it's about having fun. While I have never been one to enjoy stat-heavy RPGs, I feel like Blizz might have taken it one step too far with removing point allocation from the levelling system. My one, and truly one, major gripe with the game is the simplification of stats. I think it's fine that Blizzard is attempting to make the game into a more community-based and, in some cases, PvP/Co-op based game.

I'm never playing PC games on a mobile platform and it's a legitimate design choice to not want to include mods for anti-cheating or product security reasons. All the requirements like the strict no modding policy and always-on connection turn some people away, but they're not real issues that I have with the game. Many don't like the direction the game is headed in. D3's flaws seem a little more subjective. They really should emphasize the unique qualities of the game a little more (pets, certain mechanics, etc.) There is so much right about Torchlight's design that I think that Runic should try to separate itself from the rivalry a little more. In that respect, I feel like the major draw of Torchlight is simply that is isn't D3. Torchlight, like I said, seems like more of a translation of D2.

Torchlight is fast-paced, colorful, and exciting. In both instances, the gameplay is well-polished, balanced, and has its own unique style. To further clarify, I feel as if Torchlight is a translation of D2 gameplay while D3 is more of an evolution of D2 gameplay. I've played D2 and LoD and, while I realize that D3 has taken some drastic turns since its previous installment, I feel like they're natural and that the game has come into its own. I'm going to try my best to purchase both Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3 because they both look like incredibly fun games in the same general genre.
